Social Media- A Vicious Circle

Social media nowadays has become a huge part of our lives. It is that vicious circle that has made us wrap our whole lives around these platforms without even realizing it. The millennials today can’t go a day without socializing on these networking sites. I being a part of the millennial feels that the reason for this is that social media has created a virtual world for us. We tend to seek validation from these platforms or from the people we meet online. Social media has given people today a sense that there is a possibility of existence of “perfect life”. But it’s all a myth. The Instagram profiles or Snapchat stories are not the reality of one’s life but just a part that one is willing to showcase to us.

Specifically talking about teenagers, they from a very young age tend to get involved in these platforms, they feel obliged to match with the going trends, they compare themselves with the celebs or the influencers and they wish to be like them and live life like them partying or travelling.

Social media has turned our generation into lethargic creatures. We are always sad or disappointed but our Snapchat stories are always happening!

It has become an inborn habit to hop from one application to another just for the sake of passing time. People today avoid meeting in person as they feel it isn’t necessary to interact because why meet when we can just talk over the phones or texts.

The point isn’t that it’s all bad. But there’s a thin line between exploring and exploiting. And this line has to be drawn by parents for younger generations and by us for ourselves. Life is about simple moments and it isn’t bad to display those moments online but in all this people are forgetting to live in the moment, which is the very essence of life. Everything works out when done in limits, it’s applicable here as well. Social media is “a part” of our lives. It's time that we stop making it our lives!

  6. Very rightly said Ayush. And I feel , parents have a very crucial role to play during the up bringing of teenagers. Infact, these days most of the parents themselves prefer handing over the mobile phone rather than reading out stories to the infants. And this seems really sad for their future.
    Good job mate. ✨
